BMW ORACLE Racing fu fondato nella primavera del 2000 da Larry Ellison, un altro personaggio famoso, affascinato dall'America's Cup. Considerato uno degli uomini più ricchi al mondo, secondo la rivista Forbes, Larry Ellison è CEO della Oracle Corporation, che lui stesso fondò nel 1977.

Appassionato velista e regatante, Ellison è ben noto sui circuiti di regata, dove ha conquistato diversi titoli mondiali a bordo del suo Maxi Sayonara. Durante l'America's Cup 2003 Ellison si è allenato con il resto del team ed ha fatto parte del pozzetto durante la Louis Vuitton Cup.
Ad Auckland BMW ORACLE Racing ha dato prova di essere una squadra forte e molto ben preparata; le sue prestazioni sono state straordinarie sino alla finale della Louis Vuitton Cup, quando è stata battuta da Alinghi, in seguito vincitore della 31ma America's Cup. I risultati del team sono ancora più apprezzabili se si considerano le numerose sostituzioni di persone nei ruoli chiave della barca, durante le regate di selezione sfidanti.

In quanto Challenger of Record, BMW ORACLE Racing team lavorerà insieme con Alinghi per sviluppare l'evento in Europa ed Ellison ha garantito che la sua squadra è pronta per sfidare l'America's Cup. In May of 2000 Oracle Corporation founder and multi-time Maxi-World Champion Larry Ellison decided to launch a challenge for the America’s Cup and established Team Oracle Racing. A year later, the team formally challenged through the Golden Gate Yacht Club for the 31st America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zealand.
In July 2002 BMW came on board, and the team became Oracle BMW Racing. To earn a berth in the America’s Cup Match against the Defender, the Challenger first must win the Louis Vuitton Cup which started in October 2002. It was a demanding series with many ups and some downs for ORACLE BMW Racing. However, in its America’s Cup premier the team qualified for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final where they faced Team Alinghi in a hard fought duel, with the Swiss winning in the end. Alinghi went on to face Defender Team New Zealand, sweeping the Match 5-0. ORACLE BMW Racing and the Golden Gate Yacht Club were the first to challenge Alinghi’s yacht club, Societe Nautique Geneve for the 32nd America’s Cup, and thus became the ”Challenger of Record” – the lead challenger that negotiates the ground rules for the next event with the Defender.
Alinghi and BMW ORACLE Racing set out to modernize the America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in international sport, and which has changed very little since its inception in 1851. The first step was to organize two spectacular exhibition regattas between Alinghi and ORACLE BMW Racing to keep the Cup alive between the main events in 2003 and 2007. First ORACLE BMW Racing hosted Alinghi in September, 2003 for the “Moet Cup” on San Francisco Bay, then Alinghi hosted BMW ORACLE Racing for the “UBS Trophy” in June, 2004 at Newport, Rhode Island – home to the America’s Cup from 1930 until lost by the New York Yacht Club in 1983. BMW ORACLE Racing won both hotly contested events. Meanwhile, the team name had changed to BMW ORACLE Racing after the partners BMW and Larry Ellison renewed and strengthened their successful partnership which begun in 2002.
Despite these early successes, the path to the America’s Cup in Valencia 2007 will be extremely demanding - first a new series of pre-regattas from September 2004 through early April 2007, then BMW ORACLE Racing must defeat the strong field of Challengers in the Louis Vuitton Cup to win the chance to face Defender Team Alinghi in the 32nd America’s Cup Match.
