Quello del 2007 non sarà semplicemente il terzo tentativo di Luna Rossa, ma una sfida completamente nuova, nata dall'esperienza del progetto Prada che debuttò in America's Cup nel 1999. Il primo tentativo ebbe grande successo e il 6 febbraio 2000, Luna Rossa, timonata da Francesco de Angelis, vinse la Louis Vuitton Cup, dopo una regata mozzafiato contro AmericaOne, portata da Paul Cayard.

Ma nel Match finale la barca italiana poté poco, contro la superiorità del Defender neozelandese La campagna 2002 – 2003 non fu altrettanto brillante. All'inizio della Louis Vuitton Cup le barche subirono diverse modifiche nel tentativo di diventare più veloci e competitive, ma invano. Luna Rossa fu eliminata nelle semifinali della Louis Vuitton Cup.
Lo skipper Francesco de Angelis si è guadagnato la stima dell'intero mondo velico quando vinse le due regate conclusive (al meglio di nove prove) contro AmericaOne, aggiudicandosi la Louis Vuitton Cup 2000. La sua determinazione, unita ad un atteggiamento di disponibilità e di classe, lo ha presto fatto diventare una sorta di eroe, sia in Nuova Zelanda, sia in Italia. De Angelis ha vinto cinque titoli mondiali con tre differenti tipologie di barche.
Questa volta de Angelis può contare anche James Spithill, giovane ma sufficientemente esperto e aggressivo per non lasciarsi intimorire sulla linea di partenza.
Sebbene il team si sia ufficialmente iscritto soltanto nell'agosto 2004, è stato il primo ad allestire la base a Valencia e a cominciare gli allenamenti in mare. Luna Rossa Challenge ha iniziato la sua scalata alla 32ma America's Cup con gli Atti II e III di Valencia. Il team ha concluso l'Act 2 in seconda posizione e l'Act 3 in quarta posizione. Nel tabellone del Campionato del Mondo ACC 2004 Luna Rossa Challenge è quarta.

This Luna Rossa team is a continuation of a former Italian project that first entered the America's Cup arena in the1999 Louis Vuitton Cup. That first effort was very successful, and on the 6th of February, 2000, the swift, sleek and stylish Luna Rossa boat, skippered by Francesco de Angelis, crossed the finish line ahead of AmericaOne in the ninth and final race, to win the Louis Vuitton Cup challenger selection series and the right to race Team New Zealand for the America's Cup.
But in the America's Cup Match, the Italian team was overpowered by the strong Kiwi defence. and swept aside by Team New Zealand. The 2002 - 2003 campaign was not as successful compared with the first effort. Early in the Louis Vuitton Cup the team felt its boats were too slow, and made major modifications. But it was in vain, and Luna Rossa was eliminated in the Semi Finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup.
Luna Rossa skipper Francesco de Angelis proved his America's Cup mettle in the first campaign in the 2000 Louis Vuitton Cup Final. Trailing AmericaOne 4-3, de Angelis won the final two races of that thrilling nine-race series to claim the Louis Vuitton Cup. His determination, skill, and modest demeanour made him an instant hero in New Zealand, and at home in Italy. He is a five time world champion across three different boat classes.
This time de Angelis is supported by the highly rated James Spithill, a young, aggressive shark on the start line. Spithill has already led two America's Cup teams on the water, and is strong addition to the team.
Although Luna Rossa didn't make its challenge official until August, 2004, it was the first team to set up a base in Valencia, and trained there for over three months in the spring and early summer of 2004. Luna Rossa didn't compete in Act 1, but made a strong second place debut in Louis Vuitton Act 2 and finished in fourth position in Act 3 in Valencia. Luna Rossa was fourth in the season championship.
