Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia - ITA
dei più noti velisti italiani, al suo esordio in America's Cup;
A rinforzare
senior designer presso Reichel and Pugh.
recentemente acquistato.

History
The Challenging Club
The defending yacht club in the 32nd America's Cup, La Societe Nautique
de Geneve, has accepted the challenge made by Mascalzone Latino-Capitalia
Team on behalf of the Naples yacht club, Reale Yacht Club Canottieri
Savoia. This will be the second participation by R.Y.C.C.S. as they
were also partnered with Vincenzo Onorato during the 2002/2003 campaign
in Auckland, NZ.
During the long history of "the Savoia," which spans hundreds
of years, there have been champions representing the club in many prestigious
events. World championships, European championships, and Olympic games
(they produced a bronze medallist in 1960) to name a few. The talent
of the sailors that represent "the Savoia" is due in part
to the sailing school and programs that the yacht club provides to help
local youths reach the highest level of competition.
Since 1991 the president has been Pippo Dalla Vecchia. Under his direction
the club has returned to it's grand old days of splendor.
In January 2003 the organization known as CONI conferred upon "the
Savoia" the highest honor in Italian sport. The award is known
as the Gold Medal for Sporting Merit. This was the first time that the
award had been given to a sailing club.
More than a hundred years of history…
In the Gulf of Naples there had already been a yachting society in the
second half of the 9th century, but it's life was brief- only six years.
The next society wasn't founded until 1873. It was known as "The
Society of Regattas." Their fleet was exceptional for the time,
as it was comprised of 35 yachts. Fleets in Naples remain large and
impressive even today probably because of the beautiful location- the
Gulf, the islands, Pompeii in the distance- and the weather.
The R.Y.C.C.S. came to be founded on the 15th of July, 1893, with the
name Rowing Club Sebezia. Then, in 1895 in honor of Umberto I and his
heir to the throne Vittorio Emanuele, Prince of Naples, they decided
to insert the name Savoia.
In 1900, King Vittorio Emanuele III conferred upon the club the title
"Royal Yacht Club" and assumed the title of Honorary President
(in English terms, "commodore"). The presidency was maintained
very well for 46 years and ended on the day that he left Italy to be
exiled in Alexandria, Egypt. When the King left, the name of the yacht
club was changed; they dropped the "royal" because Italy had
become a republic. It wasn't until 1997 that the club members decided
to again add the title "royal" to their name. The color of
the burgee, Savoy blue, is a further sign of the club's gratitude to
the Savoy family.
Since 1895 the development of the club in terms of sporting and social
events has been important. Over the years they have hosted many important
European regattas and produced champion sailors. One of the most famous
events in the clubs history is the "Gordon Bennett Cup" which
they hosted between 1907-1909; it was a trophy reserved for grand 20-ton
yachts and had many royal families competing against each other.
Since 1991, with the installation of Commodore Giusseppe "Pippo"
Dalla Vecchia, the clubhouse on Pier S. Luciasi is invigorated. The
social scene and revisited traditions contribute to the club's present
glory and position at the center of Naples' cultural highlife.
