The gaming industry is one of the world’s greatest success stories, with players and customers only spending more and more on this highly profitable industry every year. As new developments and updates are made to the range of consoles, games, and equipment that are currently on the market many are questioning whether there needs to be more inclusivity for those who suffer from disabilities. Although many people are able to overcome the issues they face when gaming, this often takes a while and could deter them from wanting to play games regularly. Rather than having them overcome said problems and symptoms it is my opinion and the opinion of many that gaming companies should be looking at ways to accommodate their issues.
The short answer to the question of whether or not game consoles should be made more disability accessible would have to be yes, if those who said conditions think that there is a need for changes to accommodate their requirements then why should the multi-billion dollar companies in charge not fulfill this need. Most of the required features would be small changes that would cost little for the companies to include, but mean the absolute world to those who do not feel included within the industry.
This article will be looking at the many ways people with disabilities are not properly taken care of within the gaming industry, as well as making suggestions on how to overcome these issues and potential changes that could be made to gaming consoles and equipment. If you are someone who is suffering from a disability that is affecting your ability to game then I would highly recommend that you continue reading for some of the best advice.
If you want to help make a change then encouraging your fellow gamers to reach out to the companies in charge of designs and development would be a great place to start, if they get enough requests to consider this then they would be stupid not to listen to their paying customers. Although it could be argued that the gaming companies who have control over the latest releases should have included some of these features already, you may find that once enough attention is brought to an issue they do seem to listen and try to accommodate the needs of those who invest so much money into the industry.
One of the biggest issues to be faced by those with disabilities in the gaming industry is the lack of accommodation with the release of new controllers. Even with the latest releases, it seems that the controllers are only getting bigger, which for people who suffer from mobility issues in the hands could be a big problem for comfortable usage. One recommendation I would make in order to make the gaming world more inclusive would have to be releasing controllers that have smaller sizes, comfortable hand grips, and maybe even customizable features where the customer can tailor the design to be more comfortable for them to use over long periods of time.
A development that has been released on some games already but still needs to become a standard feature across the board would have to be tailored toward those who are deaf and hard of hearing. Games like Fortnite recently added visual sound effects to their games which will include a logo and compass on the screen to show those who cannot hear where certain in-game dangers are. Simple features like this allow those with hearing issues to play almost in the same way as those who are able to listen to the actual sound effects. It is now time to ensure that all games include this additional feature so deaf people are not being excluded.
If you are fed up with waiting for the features that you need to be included within the games you love, then getting plenty of practice or even some form of coaching could be a good way to help you overcome your issues. You may be able to find other gamers who could provide coaching to help you win at TFT, and as you get more experienced you may notice that your issues get in the way of your gameplay much less.
